Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 31, 2026
PlateScan ("we," "our," "the app") is a calorie and nutrition tracking app. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Information We Collect
- Account information: your email address if you sign up with email/password, or your name and email if you sign in with Apple or Google (Apple and Google may withhold or relay this depending on your privacy settings with them).
- Food photos: photos you take or choose to log a meal. These are sent to our AI provider to estimate calories and macronutrients, and are stored so you can see your food log history.
- Barcode scans: product barcodes you scan are looked up against the public Open Food Facts database. No personal information is sent with this lookup.
- Health and goal data: weight, goal weight, activity level, and the calorie/macro targets you set or we calculate for you.
- Subscription information: handled by Apple's App Store; we receive confirmation of your subscription status but never see your payment details.
- Feedback you submit: if you use the in-app feedback form, we store the message you write along with your app version, OS version, and device model, so we can follow up on bugs and requests.
- Device identifier and usage data: a random identifier generated for your install (not tied to your name or email) is used to prevent abuse of our AI scanning feature, associate feedback you submit, and understand how the app is used — for example, which onboarding screens are viewed, when a meal is logged and how (photo, barcode, or manual entry), and when the paywall is viewed or a trial is started.
How We Use Your Information
- To analyze food photos and estimate nutritional content.
- To calculate and track your personalized calorie and macro goals.
- To maintain your account and sync your data across your devices.
- To send you optional local reminder notifications, which you control in Settings.
- To understand how people use PlateScan and improve the app, using aggregated, device-level analytics rather than your real identity.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your data for third-party advertising.
Third-Party Services
We share the minimum data necessary with the following providers to operate the app:
- Anthropic — processes food photos to estimate nutrition (Claude API).
- Supabase — hosts our authentication system, backend, and feedback storage.
- Amplitude — first-party product analytics, so we can understand app usage and improve the experience. This is not used for advertising or cross-app tracking.
- Open Food Facts — public barcode/nutrition database (no personal data sent).
- Apple — Sign in with Apple and subscription billing via the App Store.
- Google — Sign in with Google, if you choose that option.
Data Retention and Deletion
Your food log, profile, and account data are retained until you delete them. You can reset your data at any time from Settings, or request full account deletion by contacting us at the email below.
Your Choices
- You can use PlateScan without creating an account — your data then stays only on your device.
- You can turn off notifications at any time in Settings or iOS Settings.
- You can request a copy or deletion of your data by contacting us.
Children's Privacy
PlateScan is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date above.
